  “Why her?” Jonas shook his head, refusing to believe. “Why Saera out of all the billions of lives in this galaxy?”

  “The Entrent process wipes the host's mind while giving them telepathic abilities. She was a perfect vessel. Empty of spirit, but filled with unbound powers.”

  “Say I believe you.” Jonas scoffed. “It’s crazy to even talk about this, but say Saera is a vessel for this monster you’re talking about. What then? How do we get it out of her?”

  “My intention is not to free the spirit from the body, but to kill it once and for all.”

  Killing his own sister was something unimaginable to Jonas. He understood she was no longer inside or in control of her body. Still, it was his little sister. It was Saera. “If you’re asking me to kill her, I can’t. I just can’t.”

  “I’m asking you to distract her so it can happen. You must not stand in the way.”

  “Is there any hope? In saving Saera? Can you somehow recover her mind? Her soul? The person she once was?”

  “I do not know. There is unpredictability in dealing with agents of chaos. Naturally, there will be a cost.”

  “Please, I’ll do anything to save her.” When Saera was taken, it was like a disease infected Jonas, slowly wilting the core of his being. He had done things he never thought himself capable of doing, including killing many people. Jonas would gladly trade his life for his sister to have another chance at hers. “Whatever the cost. Anything!”

  “Then you must do as we say. Any deviation will result in failure and the forfeiture of our existence.”

  “I understand.” He nodded.

  “Where we are heading, the world may seem real, but remember it is not.” Her expression stiffened. “We are facing a powerful telepath. They can control perception and thus reality.”

  “How do you fight such an ability?” Jonas sighed.

  “Do not trust your senses. Trust what you know to be true.”

  “And where is Saera?” Jonas asked, moving closer to Roni. “Can you take me to her now?”

  Roni smirked. “She has been hiding in plain sight. She always has been.”
